An hour and a half later, he still hadn’t budged from his spot except to fetch more wieners and buns once. Customers had been trickling in ever since those first two large groups arrived, and now the place was packed with what seemed like every freshman on the UNC campus.

Greg didn’t mind. The good thing about being super busy—other than getting through the day faster—was that he no longer had much time to notice the black figure lingering in his peripheral vision, or the low, sinister whispers in his ear. At least the thing no longer seemed interested in touching him.

“I’m going to get more relish.” Mal took off his gloves and tossed them in the trash can. “Anything else we need from the fridge area?”

Greg glanced into the warming ovens. “We’re good for wieners. Might need more buns soon.”

“Okay. I’ll go ahead and grab your buns.” Mal grabbed a double handful of Greg’s butt and squeezed, then headed for the other side of the kitchen, laughing.

Greg shook his head. “You’re just disappointed you didn’t get to grab my wieners, pervert.”

“Plural. You and Adrian must have an interesting sex life.”

The mental picture made Greg laugh. “I am so telling Adrian this story.”

Mal snickered, which was par for the course, but he was looking out front, which was strange. He answered Greg’s question before he could ask it. “Your other boyfriend’s here.”

“Fantastic.” Greg looked. Jon’s gaze locked with his. Jon smiled and waved. Unable to make himself act like a total ass, Greg waved back and even managed an anemic smile. He ducked as far out of sight as possible the second Denise distracted Jon by taking his order. “Why the hell can’t he go eat someplace else?”

“C’mon, everyone knows if you want dogs you gotta go to DogO.” Grinning, Mal slapped Greg on the back. “Don’t worry, I won’t let him molest you.”

Greg’s smartass reply was cut off by a sharp exclamation from Len, who’d pulled Dex off fryer duty and taken it over herself when he’d fallen behind in the after-lunch rush. Setting his half-built chili-cheese dog on the counter, Greg hurried to where Len stood rubbing the back of one shoulder. Mal followed, looking worried.

“Len?” Greg started to touch her and pulled his hand away when she jumped. He frowned. “You okay?”

“Yeah. Fine. Just got a twinge in my arm.” She stared up at Greg with wide eyes, her chest rising and falling with breaths coming way too fast. “My neck’s been hurting a lot lately. The doctor said I probably have a pinched nerve.”

Greg studied her face. She looked as if she hadn’t slept in about a week, and she was twitchy enough that he questioned the wisdom of her working with hot oil. She was stubborn and contrary as hell when she felt like her abilities were being called into question, but he had to try. “You want me to do the fryer? Hot dog assembly would probably be easier on your neck and arm.”

She glared at him.
